To maintain your car properly today, here’s a checklist of things you can do, depending on how recently they've been done and your car's current condition. You don’t need to do everything at once — pick what’s due based on mileage, time, or symptoms.
These take just a few minutes:
Check oil level – Top off or schedule an oil change if low or dirty.
Check tire pressure – Inflate to recommended PSI (usually listed in the driver’s door frame).
Inspect tire tread and condition – Look for uneven wear, cracks, or embedded objects.
Look for fluid leaks under the car – Oil, coolant, or transmission fluid leaks should be addressed ASAP.
Clean your windshield & check wipers – Visibility is safety.
Test all lights – Headlights, brake lights, turn signals, etc.
These depend on your last service or mileage (check your owner's manual):
Oil and filter change – Every 3,000–7,500 miles, or as recommended.
Tire rotation & alignment check – Every 5,000–7,500 miles.
Brake inspection – Listen for squeaks, grinding, or reduced braking power.
Top off/flush fluids – Coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid.
Battery check – Especially in extreme temperatures or if it’s over 3 years old.
Air filter replacement – Engine and cabin air filters (usually every 15,000–30,000 miles).
Inspect belts and hoses – Look for cracks, wear, or leaks.
Wash and wax the car to protect paint.
Vacuum and clean interior to preserve upholstery.
Update maintenance records.
